Illegal Signage

The posting of signs on property by anyone other than the property owner or the owner’s agent or representative, or the lessee or his agent or representative, is illegal, according to Sec. 13:63.1 of the Baton Rouge Code of Ordinances. Furthermore, those in violation of this ordinance may be fined anywhere from $50.00 to $500.00 and/or imprisoned for up to 60 days.

In addition, per Sec. 12:300 of the Code of Ordinances, it is considered illegal for anyone – either directly or by requesting that another do so – to attach any kind of handbill, sign, card, picture, placard or advertisement of any kind – business or political – of any other material to any pole, post or object on the streets, alleys, sidewalks or other rights-of-way of the City-Parish. Furthermore, it is also unlawful to suspend or erect any banner, placard or advertisement of any kind of and across any public street, alley or other public way. All of the aforementioned offenses are serious and carry fines that will escalate with multiple offenses, including $125.00 for a first violation, $250.00 for a second violation within a two-year period and $500.00 for a third and any subsequent violations within a two-year period.
