Manhole Issues

An access control manhole is the downstream manhole in a public or private storm or sanitary sewer that is nearest to the point where the facility storm or sanitary sewer is connected. If there are structural issues involving a manhole, please contact 3-1-1 as soon as possible with complete details on the structural deficiencies.

Any manhole that is missing a cover involves a very serious safety risk and should be treated appropriately. If you notice a manhole with a missing cover, please contact 3-1-1 and specify the specific location of the missing manhole cover. To the extent you are able, please monitor or cordon off the area until City-Parish response crews arrive to assess the situation.

Please note – any discharging or disposal of waste and/or hazardous or toxic substances into a manhole or illegal connection into the City-Parish wastewater system – or into a storm sewer, ditch, canal or bayou – is illegal and violations shall result in potential civil and/or criminal penalties or damage. For more information on the proper disposal of liquid domestic waste and grease trap waste from regulated commercial facilities, please refer to Sec. 2:275 of the Baton Rouge Code of Ordinances.

For more information about the discharge or disposal of hazardous or toxic substances, please contact the Department of Environmental Services at (225) 389-5456.
